Cards like the new 4c Omnath in Standard break the game because there is much more reward for less risk. The problem with Standard is an overall imbalance between risk and reward. The game of EDH has a relatively fair balance between risk and reward, supplemented by the general attitude of 'make it fun for the table.' Obviously winning is the point of playing Magic, but with EDH that win is more satisfying when it comes from strategic interaction and calculated decisions. Because of this gross imbalance, Standard has become increasingly frustrating to play.ĮDH has gotten popular this year because the format favors the play experience over just winning the game. At the same time, the game also allows as little as a single play to dramatically flip who has the advantage. There are too many cards in the past year that reward the player with advantage and not enough disadvantage in other areas for having played them.
